Damage. Manna House/Riverside, September 2025

It’s really hard to be confronted with serious human damage. We can’t help but imagine our loved ones, ourselves, our past being ripped apart.

To incidents are floating around my head at the moment, disturbing my peace. One occurred yesterday at the Dock Museum. We were doing some filming, opened a box and there, nestled among carefully scrunched pieces of paper, was a human skull from over 2000 years ago. Julia picked up the skull gently in gloved hands and for a short moment we were connected to that life from far away across time, but our neighbour too.

A great uncoiling of understanding. My own mortality. The lives, gone now, of my grandparents, my father, my dear friends who passed early in life. Julia was holding a passageway leading to a place we’ve never been before.

And then today. A beautiful and yet sad conversation with a young person who’s been homeless. I felt the darkness of those words sink into me like being dropped in a huge well of black ink. But also, in that same conversation, there were little traces of light. And it is those that we will try to follow to find a way out.
